Choosing a fibre tariff isn't simply about getting the highest speed. What matters is finding a connection that suits the people who live at home, the connected devices and, above all, the real use you make of the internet.
Someone who lives alone and uses the internet to browse or watch series doesn't have the same needs as a family with several televisions, computers and consoles. And if you're a gamer, there are other factors we need to take into account too.
I'm going to explain it simply, because I want you to choose a connection that works well for you without paying for megabits you probably won't use.
If you live alone, 300 Mbps is usually enough
Even if you live alone, you probably have several devices connected: your mobile, television, computer, a console, a security camera or some smart device.
That doesn't mean you automatically need to get the highest speed.
With Don Rayo's 300 Mbps fibre you can:
- Browse the internet and use social media.
- Watch films and series in high quality.
- Work or study from home.
- Make video calls.
- Listen to music.
- Have several devices connected.
- Download files and make everyday use of the internet.
You can be watching a series while your mobile stays connected and your computer downloads an update. For normal use, 300 Mbps offers a comfortable connection with plenty of capacity.
Mind you: if you're a regular gamer, even if you live alone, my recommendation would be to start straight away with 600 Mbps.
What if there are two of you at home?
For a couple or a two-person household, 300 Mbps can also be enough if use is normal.
For example, one person can be watching a film while the other browses the internet, makes a video call or checks their social media.
However, I'd consider 600 Mbps if you both:
- Work from home.
- Watch high-quality content at the same time.
- Download large files.
- Use gaming consoles or computers.
- Have numerous devices connected.
- Want more capacity during peak hours.
It's not just about the number of people. Two heavy users can need more capacity than a family that mainly uses the internet to browse and watch television.
For a family, 600 Mbps is the most balanced option
In a family home, it's common for several people to use the internet at the same time.
While someone's watching a series on the television, someone else might be working, the kids might be playing online and several mobiles might stay connected to the Wi-Fi.
In these cases, 600 Mbps fibre is usually the most balanced option.
It offers enough capacity to:
- Work from home and make video calls.
- Watch high-quality content on several devices.
- Play online.
- Download files and updates.
- Use computers, mobiles, tablets and televisions at the same time.
- Keep smart home devices connected.
600 Mbps gives you more room when the whole family uses the connection at once. That way, a download, an update or a film doesn't unnecessarily affect the rest of the users.
Are there gamers at home? I recommend a minimum of 600 Mbps
If you play regularly, my recommendation would be to start with Don Rayo's 600 Mbps fibre, even if you live alone.
Today's video games can take up a lot of space and get frequent updates. With 600 Mbps you'll be able to download games and updates faster, play while other devices stay connected and have enough capacity to use streaming platforms, voice chat or cloud services.
Now, there's something important you should know: for online gaming, the contracted speed isn't the only thing that matters.
These also play a role:
- The stability of the connection.
- Latency or ping.
- The quality of the Wi-Fi coverage.
- The distance to the game server.
- The router and device you use.
- Whether you connect via Wi-Fi or network cable.
Whenever possible, I recommend connecting the computer or console directly to the router using a network cable. This helps reduce interference and gives you a more stable connection during games.
When would I choose 1 Gbps?
1 Gbps fibre is designed for homes with much heavier use.
It can be the right option if:
- There are several gamers at home.
- You frequently download large games.
- Someone games and streams at the same time.
- You create and upload videos or professional content.
- You work daily with very heavy files.
- There are numerous computers, consoles and televisions connected.
- Several people need a lot of capacity at the same time.
It can also be a good choice for large families or homes where the internet is an essential tool for working, studying, entertainment and creating content.
But I want to be honest with you: getting 1 Gbps doesn't automatically mean everything will work better. If your use isn't that demanding, you probably won't get the most out of all that speed.
More speed doesn't always fix slow Wi-Fi
Before you upgrade your tariff, there's something else we need to check.
The quality of the connection inside your home also depends on:
- Where the router is placed.
- The size and layout of the house.
- The distance between the router and the devices.
- The walls the signal has to pass through.
- The quality of the devices used.
- Whether you connect via Wi-Fi or network cable.
If the router is hidden inside a cabinet, tucked in a corner or too far from some rooms, getting more speed won't make the signal reach any better.
In that case, maybe you don't need more megabits. You might need to improve the Wi-Fi coverage in your home.
And I'd rather explain this to you before you end up paying more for something that won't solve the problem.
So, which fibre would I choose for you?
My general recommendation would be:
- Someone living alone with everyday use: 300 Mbps.
- A couple with normal use: 300 Mbps.
- A couple with heavy use or several demanding devices: 600 Mbps.
- A family: 600 Mbps.
- A gamer, even living alone: minimum 600 Mbps.
- Several gamers, content creators or a very connected home: 1 Gbps.
These recommendations are a good starting point, but every home is different.
I don't want to offer you the highest speed just because. I want to help you choose the connection that really fits you, your family and the way you use the internet.
Because a good recommendation isn't about selling you more. It's about listening to you and advising you well.
Tell us how many people live at home, what devices you use and what you need the internet for. One of our Advisors will work with you to find the most suitable option.
